Brisbane Valley Kayak and Ride

Fernvale QLD, Australia

Fitness Level

Level 2: Moderate

The upper reaches of the Brisbane River offer a magnificent, unexplored ecosystem that’s right on the doorstep of anyone lucky enough to live in south-east Queensland.

We’ve created a multi-faceted, two-day adventure on water and on wheels, combined with a luxurious glamping experience on the banks of the river at Allawah.

The kayaks, bikes, transport to and from Brisbane are all taken care of as well as the complete luxury glamping setup and all of the catering from breakfast on day one to lunch on day two – all you have to do is make it to the start line fit and raring to go.

The expedition is for people of all fitness and skill levels. We use double kayaks on the river, which are easy to power and steer. For the half-day on the bike we use entry-level mountain bikes and travel along the well-kept, virtually flat Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.

To keep the overall cost down we’ve opted for 5-metre triple-share bell tents which comfortably house three single air mattresses (there is the option to pay a supplement for a twin or single-share if you snore or need some extra privacy) and respect current social-distancing regulations.

It’s time to stretch your adventure-wings once more, so grab a friend or five, and join us exploring this stunning part of our magnificent state.

Brisbane River - kayak

Brisbane River - kayak

The upper reaches of the Brisbane River are a stunning part of south-east Queensland that pass through nature reserves and private land without the distractions and noise of the city. It’s an idyllic journey with sightings of platypus, snakes and eagles overhead for those with a keen eye and quiet paddle.

After a hearty breakfast, we start our kayak adventure at Savage’s Crossing close to Fernvale. We travel in two-person expedition kayaks that are easy to steer and paddle, comfortable to sit in and adjustable to suit all sizes and frames. They’re also loaded with refreshments, snacks and lunch to keep your fire burning.

For the most part, the river flows swiftly downstream with shallow water and a few navigational challenges to overcome on the way, along with sections of flat, smooth water that give you a chance to sit back and take in your surroundings.

We end our day on the water at Kholo Bridge, around 25kms downstream.

Glamping and dining on the banks of the river

Glamping and dining on the banks of the river

After a big day on the water we head to our riverside campsite for a well-earned shower, rest and hearty meal. We camp close to the river in luxury bell glamping tents, dine on a magnificent dinner, and savour a refreshing drink under the winter stars with the campfire fire burning in the background. It’s the perfect way to wrap up day one.

Ride the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail

Ride the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail

After watching sunrise over the misty river, a scrumptious breakfast is served before we say goodbye to our campground and hello to the next adventure.

The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail is the longest in Australia at over 160km and we get to sample the section between Lowood and Fernvale. The mountain bikes are easy to ride on the well graded trail.

Fernvale is our destination, around 20kms east, where we stop for lunch at the famous Fernvale Bakery. Our minibus ride back to the city takes around 45 minutes and we aim to be back in the CBD around 3pm.
