MOUNT JAGUNGAL WILDERNESS EXPEDITION

This is our first snow-bound expedition on Australian soil and it’s an absolute cracker! Experience the captivating seclusion of a multi-day ski tour through the magnificent Snowy Mountains. Embark on an adventure from Munyang Power Station to the iconic Mt. Jagungal and back.

This challenging yet rewarding expedition delves deep into Australia’s alpine wilderness, offering vast snowy plains, mountain passes, historic huts, and the opportunity to summit one of the region’s most prominent peaks.

Throughout our adventure, we’ll use cross-country skis to travel across the snow-covered terrain, towing several sleds to carry the bulk of our gear. If you’ve never used skis before, don’t worry. We’ve included a half-day of training around Perisher Resort to get you up to speed before heading to our first overnight hut.

We’ve decided not to include your camp food during the adventure as part of the package, as everyone has their preferences, but if you’re time-poor or don’t know where to start we will help you source the right food and snacks before the adventure. If you don’t have your own gear we can easily organise hiring for you too. See, told you we’d make it easy!

If you’re considering our Extreme Dreams: Arctic Tri-Nation Challenge, this is the perfect proving ground to see how you handle the physicality and tough conditions before heading to the Arctic Circle with us.

MINIMUM NUMBERS – this expedition is subject to a minimum number of paying guests and once reached, the expedition is guaranteed to go ahead if not, it will be cancelled, and you can transfer amounts paid to an alternate expedition or departure date or receive a full refund.

INSURANCE – We highly recommend taking out personal travel insurance within seven days of booking this expedition. It will ensure you are covered if things go pear-shaped on your side even before the expedition begins including cover for lost baggage, flight disruption or cancellation, broken gear or personal health or injury.

Itinerary

Travel to Jindabyne

Travel to Jindabyne

Tue 13 Aug 2024

Welcome to your Best Life Adventure. Today is all about preparing you for the expedition that lies ahead.

We’ll meet you at Canberra Airport and head to the gear hire shop to collect everything you need to protect yourself from the elements. Once we’ve all spent way too much on extra gear we really don’t need, it’s time to hit the road to Jindabyne.

Once we arrive at our accommodation, we’ll go through all of your gear, food, and equipment to ensure we have everything you need to get through the next few days, safely and in as much comfort as possible. Our expedition guides will help you fit and pack everything into your bags and the sleds, run through the expedition itinerary and answer any questions you may have about what lies ahead.

We head out for a group dinner to spend time with our freshly formed team, before hitting the hay early in preparation for a big few days ahead.

Ski Training

Ski Training

Wed 14 Aug 2024

Our expedition transport is primarily cross-country skis, but don’t worry if you’ve never used them before, nor have many people who live in Australia, and that’s the idea of this adventure – to learn a new skill.

We travel from Jindabyne the ski school in Perisher and spend a few hours getting used to our gear, and a new form of transport as we travel towards Porcupine Rocks.

After we’ve devoured lunch the expedition begins for real as we head out into the wilderness, and drive to Island Bend to set up camp for the night.

Ski to Mawson's Hut

Ski to Mawson's Hut

Thu 15 Aug 2024

We start early and depart from Island Bend for Munyang Power Station, nestled in the heart of the Snowy Mountains.

Our expedition route takes us through a snow-filled valley and crosses the mountain range known as the Kerries. With clear weather, the view extends far into the distance giving you a magnificent panorama of the surrounding wintery landscape.

As the sun starts to set on our day, we arrive at Mawson’s Hut, our cosy accommodation for the night. We enjoy a hearty dinner in the warmth of the hut, before heading into our tents for the night to recharge and prepare for the next day.

If we are behind the schedule, we may make for Schlink Hut as a backup as ideally, we’d like to arrive with enough time to set up a snow camp before dark.

Summit Mount Jagungal

Summit Mount Jagungal

Fri 16 Aug 2024

We leave our packs behind and head out for a day of summit-seeking adventure – with the magnificent Mount Jagungal as our destination.

It’s the seventh-highest peak in Australia and higher than all other surrounding peaks and during mid-winter is a cross-country skiing dream with shallow slopes and easy access.

From here we head back to the iconic Mawson’s Hut for an evening around the fire.

Depart Mawson’s Hut for Mt Jagungal Summit (2061m)

Ski to Valentine or Tin Hut

Ski to Valentine or Tin Hut

Sat 17 Aug 2024

As we wake up to another majestic high-country sunrise, the weather outside dictates where we’ll head to for our day of cross-country ski adventures.

Option One takes us to Valentine’s Hut via Valentine’s Falls, option Two will be up and over Brassy Ranges, with a ski into Tin Hut for our overnight.

Whichever route Mother Nature helps us decide on, we’ll spend around 6-8 hours skiing across some stunning remote wilderness snowscapes.

Final ski day and return to Jindabyne

Final ski day and return to Jindabyne

Sun 18 Aug 2024

It’s time to pack up camp and hit the trail for a final time as we depart from our overnight wilderness escape and make for Munyang Power Station.

Once we’re back in Jindabyne, washed, and cleaned to within an inch of our lives it’s time to hit the town for a celebration of things civilised, with a cooked dinner and cold beer.

We’re back at our overnight accommodation to rest our weary heads on a real pillow once again.

Travel to Canberra

Mon 19 Aug 2024

Our final team breakfast will be at one of Jindabyne’s famous eateries, devouring something that’s NOT dehydrated, before we hit the road back towards Canberra.

We stop en route to drop off the hire gear before bidding you farewell at Canberra Airport in time to catch your flight home.

Your Best Life Adventure finishes here.
